Is a part-time job even worth it as a teen these days?

Is a part-time job even worth it as a teen these days?
Between school, homework, and trying to have a life, who actually has time for a job? I've been debating this for weeks—some say it teaches responsibility, others say it’s just another stressor. Plus, minimum wage hasn’t moved in forever, so what’s even the point?

I’m 16 and my parents keep pushing me to apply somewhere, but I’d rather spend my weekends gaming or hanging with friends. Minimum wage gigs feel like a ripoff when gas and snacks eat up half my paycheck. Anyone else just over it?

What’s your take—worth the grind or not?

I totally get what you mean - I had a part-time job at my local animal shelter when I was 15 just to save up for college and it really opened my eyes to different career paths. *(edited)*

Wait, animal shelters are actually one OF the best places to work if you're a teen—they're super flexible with hours and you get to work with animals, which is way more rewarding than flipping burgers. did you get to take the dogs out for walks or was it mostly cleaning?

SO Soyeon Zhou 1 week, 4 days ago
Wait, why do you THINK animal shelters are the best? I worked at a fast food place and it taught me way more about real life
AN Andi Dela Cruz 1 week, 4 days ago
why is this so accurate 😭
TO Tobi Kone 1 week, 4 days ago
yeah animal shelters are wild like that—turns out dealing with animals teaches you more about responsibility and patience than most retail gigs ever will. I worked at a shelter one summer in college and honestly, the weirdest customers were the humans, not the dogs. plus, if you’re into it, they’re always looking for help with social media or events too, so you get a little resume boost without even trying.

— okay, so I actually got a part-time job at a pet store when I was in high school and the owners were super understanding about balancing school work, but I still had to quit because the stress was getting to me – I'd get assigned closing duties on Fridays, which would conflict with my SAT prep and, honestly, it was just too much; animal shelters sound lovely, but it's not all sunshine and rainbows, Yuna, every workplace has its own challenges.
LA Lars Berg 1 week, 4 days ago
Yeah, I get where you're coming from—animal shelters are way better than fast food, no contest. I worked at a hardware store for like a year and a half, and yeah, it was boring as hell stocking nails and stuff, but at least I wasn’t getting screamed at by some guy in a tracksuit over a missing fry. Plus, you actually feel like you’re doing something good, which is more than I can say for my old coworker who quit after a week because his manager called him "kid" like it was an insult.

IR Irem Polat 1 week, 4 days ago
Ugh—like, sure animal shelters are "better" in theory but have you seen the burnout rates from underpaid staff? (and don’t even get me started on the emotional labor of dealing with abandoned pets)
IR Irem Polat 1 week, 4 days ago
Many animal shelters don't have funding 😭
10
LA Lars Berg 1 week, 4 days ago
Yeah, Irem’s right about the funding—most shelters run on donations and grants, so yeah, they’re stretched thin. but here’s the thing: if you’re gonna work there, push for stipends or tuition help, some orgs offer that. fast food’s worse for wages, but at least they’ll pay you on TIME, lol
LA Lars Berg 1 week, 4 days ago
Yeah but did it actually pay enough to matter after gas and taxes?
10
IR Irem Polat 1 week, 4 days ago
Ok fair point actually lmao

IR Irem Polat 1 week, 4 days ago
Yeah, except the animal shelter probably paid in "exposure" and a single bag of kibble tho

Why is this so accurate tho

I think the DISCUSSION has been leaning on the idea that a part-time job as a teen is just about saving money for college or buying things, but it's so much more than that – it's about building work ethic, learning time management, and developing emotional intelligence (which are all crucial for long-term success). Plus, research has shown that teens with part-time jobs tend to have better academic performance and lower rates of depression.

I get why it feels pointless sometimes—like you're trading time for pennies when you could be doing something more meaningful. But honestly, I worked a part-time job at your age too, and yeah, some days it sucked, but it taught me way more than school ever did about real LIFE. What’s the thing that makes you question whether it’s worth it the most?

Yeah, a part-time job’s still worth it—you’re not just making cash, you’re learning how to show up and handle things when it’s not all fun and games. Most teens these days act like they’re owed something for free, but the real world doesn’t work that way. *(edited)*

IR Irem Polat 1 week, 4 days ago
Part-time jobs teach you way more than just "responsibility"—like how to navigate passive-aggressive managers or why your coworker’s "helpful" advice is actually just them dumping their shift on you. The real question isn’t whether it’s worth it, but whether the skills you’re trading your time for align with what you actually care about

What kind of part-time job are you thinking of? Retail and food service teach way more grit than people give them credit for honestly 😤

IR Irem Polat 1 week, 4 days ago
Part-time jobs aren’t just about the paycheck—they’re about learning how to show up when you’d rather not, and that’s a skill adults pretend isn’t real. (I’ve seen too many peers quit after two weeks because the manager "didn’t appreciate their potential," which is just code for "they didn’t like being told no.") The real value isn’t in the hourly wage but in the quiet humiliation of realizing you’re replaceable—something no classroom can teach you.

Same here Soyeon, I had a part-time job in high school and it was a real grind but it taught me time management skills that I still use today, trust me it's worth it if you can handle it 👀
IR Irem Polat 1 week, 4 days ago

Part-time jobs still teach way more than school about real-world trade-offs—just because the pay feels "meh" doesn’t mean the skills aren’t priceless ngl

Yeah no, the "experience" line is such a scam when you're making $11 an hour to learn how to fold shirts or whatever. like, cool, now i know how to fold shirts, but also i'm still broke and my manager is 22 and thinks "teamwork" means yelling at us for not smiling enough. *(edited)*

I get why it feels pointless sometimes—like you’re trading time for peanuts while the world moves faster than your paycheck. But honestly, the real value isn’t just the cash, it’s the rhythm of showing up, learning how to handle bosses who don’t care about your excuses, and realizing that $15 an hour adds up when you’re not blowing it all on gas and boba. Plus, nothing beats the quiet confidence of buying your own stuff without asking.
