What's wrong with my study routine that always leaves me forgetful?

What's wrong with my study routine that always leaves me forgetful?
When you're in the library for hours on end, it's easy to get caught up in the idea that you're learning, but if you can't recall anything the next day, there's a problem.

I used to be that kid in college who thought studying meant just re-reading my notes for hours. I'd show up to classes feeling prepared but walk out with a brain full of blank spaces. It was like I was drinking from a firehose and most of it never stuck. It took me years to figure out why - not because I wasn't smart, but because it's actually really hard to remember something when you're just re-reading it over and over again.

What's your secret to learning retention?

yep, been there. the problem is you're expecting to remember every little thing from a study routine that's probably an hour long at most. you'd never rely on trying to cram an entire day in your head like that in real life, so why are you doing it with studying?

its funny u mention forgetful cuz for me its always the overstudying before a test that gets me - i realize now its not about cramming everything in at the last min but spreading it out to actually retain the info

What if the overstudying is just ur brain’s way of saying hey maybe try actualy sleeping instead of cramming till 3am

cramming just trains your brain to dump

overstudying is just cramming with extra steps and your brain goes "lol nope" when you try to recall any of it later
WO Wolfgang Hartmann 1 month, 1 week ago
lowkey tho

Like your initial response just leaves me a little flat lol "RIP" feels pretty dismissive of the whole situation

rip? nah you jsut dont sleep enough and your brain is basically a browser with 50 tabs open all the time try closing some before you study iykyk

study routine sounds like an excuse lmao u just gotta take notes and review before bed ngl my friends are all like "pavel study for 2 hours and retain nothing"
11
SA Sara Hosseini 1 month, 1 week ago
Notes and review being a good starting point is all well and good but people usually forget what they're supposed to be reviewing in the first place bc they don't really understand what they're trying to learn - like there's a huge gap between what they read and what actually sticks in their longterm memory

edit: yes i know i said the same thing twice. it's called emphasis

what's your sleep schedule like?
2
WO Wolfgang Hartmann 1 month, 1 week ago
study routine is prob just a euphemism for "trying to adult". but seriously, maybe your brain just needs a break, like i used to cram all night for exams and end up blanking the next morning, until i stumbled upon a friend's 'exam nap' schedule

SA Sara Hosseini 1 month, 1 week ago
What do you mean by "trying to adult" - is wolfgang implying that the struggle is not just about studying but also about getting into a routine that makes sense with responsibilities and stuff like that *(edited)*

FR Francesca Morin 1 month, 1 week ago
but what about sleep? You can’t cram memory into a tired brain—it’s like trying to save a file on a corrupted drive
14
FR François Bianchi 1 month, 1 week ago
i totally feel you on this one francesca but how do you deal with the sleep thing in reality tho like i stay up late trying to study then i wake up an hour before class and just scramble to cram in as much as i can before hitting the door

Sleep deprivation isnt usually the issue for me but i THINK ive noticed that studying in the same spot every day kinda gets to a point where my brain forgets i learned something and its harder to recall it outside of that exact same place

Study routines can be so... ritualistic - i remember trying to cram 10+ hours of studying into a day, used to set alarms every 90 minutes to 'stay focused' but ended up just checking my phone for no reason. do you use a planner or digital calendar to keep track of your stuff?

omg i used to struggle w study rountines too, but ngl i found out i was tryna cram all my notes into 1 session, 3 hours straight lol, no breaks, just tryna absorb everything. one time i did taht for a psych exam and i swear my brain just shut down, couldn't even remember what the question was lmao

KL Klaus Zimmermann 1 month, 1 week ago
First time posting but ive been dealing with this exact thing for like 6 months so i was reading this thing about ultralearning and how if you're cramming all your study sessions into one day it's gonna be really hard to retain info the next day but if you break it UP into smaller sessions spaced out over time, retention is way higher

You're not using spaced REPETITION for your study materials.

Are you studying for a test or just reading a lit review, honestly?
12
PA Pavel Sidorov 1 month, 1 week ago
you're studying from memory like its an exam and not practicing actual recall lol, like are you even testing yourself or just reading through notes in a row iykyk

lol study routine thingy, ngl i've been pretty guilty of this too. my problem is i always try to cram all my studying into like one big marathon session where i just binge all my notes, but that's honestly just setting me up for burnout and retention issues LATER on. does using smth like flashcards or smth help anyone else with retaining info?
