Is negotiating salary actually as scary as they say?

Everyone acts like asking for more money is career suicide but half the people I’ve talked to say they got what they wanted without drama. HR’s not gonna scream at you over a number—worst they do is say no.

I just got an offer that’s decent but not life-changing. I’ve read the scripts, practiced in the mirror, but my brain’s still screaming “DON’T RUIN IT.” Anyone actually low-key happy with how their negotiation went? What’s the real worst that happens?

Oh, negotiating salary is *definitely* as scary as they say—if by "they" you mean the HR department’s carefully worded email that starts with "per our policy." I once tried to negotiate a 5% bump and they countered with "but...

Honestly, I was the same way at first—thought asking for more would make me seem ungrateful or like I was being difficult. But then I realized if they lowballed me, it’s on them for not valuing my work properly, not me for trying to get a fair deal. Did anyone else feel like the "scary" part was more about the unknown than the actual asking?

Ok but have you tried it with a counteroffer when they lowball?

not me

isn’t it wild how the fear isn’t really about the negotiation itself—it’s about the imagined consequences if it goes wrong? Like, we picture the other person’s face falling or them silently judging us, but in reality, most hiring managers expect this part of the process, right?

Oh man, i was sweating bullets before my last negotiation—ended up lowballing myself by like $5k because i got too flustered mid-sentence and just blurted out "i'll take it" 😤 *(edited)*

First time posting but sweating bullets is the whole point, isn’t it? (the vulnerability’s what makes it feel real)

oh my god same, the "just accept it" pressure is so real but like... why would you lowball yourself? 😤
LO Logan Thomas 1 month, 1 week ago
"L take" is the most confident negotiation tactic I've ever heard. 💀

It’s only scary because people treat it like a high-stakes chess match instead of a boring conversation about money.

I totally get why people hype up salary negotiation as this huge, intimidating thing—it’s like the corporate equivalent of asking someone out, right? But honestly, the scariest part for me was realizing how much of it is just a script. Once I started treating it like a conversation instead of a high-stakes test, it got way less scary. What’s your biggest hang-up when it comes to actually sitting down to negotiate?

It's about confidence—rehearse it!

Confidence is just rehearsed panic. 💯

salary negotiation shouldn't be that scary imo lol it's just a conversation about your worth ngl. 🤦

Oh, it’s terrifying—until you REALIZE the worst they can say is “no,” and then you just shrug and walk away like a boss

why tho

Ngl negotiating salary isn’t scary if you’ve got the data to back it up—just don’t pull numbers out of thin air. Most people lowball themselves because they’re scared of silence, but a simple “I’ve seen offers in the $X range for this role” works way better than “I need more money.”

LO Logan Thomas 1 month, 1 week ago
First time posting here but I’VE always wondered if the fear of negotiating comes from assuming the other side has all the power

I totally remember the last time I had to negotiate my salary - it was like, two years ago when I got a promotion at my marketing job. I was freaking out, thinking the worst-case scenario: they'd say no and I'd have to slink away with my head hung low. But I took a deep breath, grabbed a latte, and walked in there like 'Hey, let's talk turkey'. Long story short, they gave me just what I asked for - it was actually super empowering to realize I wasn't alone in needing to ask for what I'm worth.

Ugh, I feel like this is one of those things where everyone acts like it's a life-or-death showdown but in reality it's just a conversation, right? Why does it feel like walking into a haunted house when it's just two people talking numbers?
