Texas A&M hosted a long and talented list of 2027 prospects this weekend, providing third-year coach Mike Elko and his staff another key opportunity to communicate with several of the program's 14 commits, combined with a host of uncommitted priority prospects who will announce their commitment dates in the coming weeks.
This offseason, Elko hired former Arkansas defensive coordinator Travis Williams as the program's new linebackers coach, one of the better moves following former defensive coordinator Jay Bateman's departure for Kentucky after two seasons with the program.
After landing four linebacker commitments in the 2026 signing class, Elko and Williams are hoping that either five-star Kaden Henderson or four-star Mikahi Allen becomes the first linebacker commitment, as Allen, one of the late additions to the busy weekend, took his official visit on Saturday, while announcing his targeted commitment date in the process.
Thanks to AggieYell ( subscription required ) insider Joseph Hastings' reporting, Allen's mother, Josie Payoute, stated that Mikahi spent time with Mike Elko and Travis Williams, trusting both coaches to develop her son, while stating that early July is when the four-star backer is looking to announce his commitment.
“July 11,” Payoute stated. “He’s definitely going to go with his heart when it’s time to commit. He’s going to pray on it, feel it out and, as a family, we’re going to make a decision. See where he’s going to go, be able to play, and grow on and off the field.”
According to Hastings, Allen will take one more official visit with the Texas Longhorns next weekend (June 5-7) and has no other OV plans this summer. If this recruiting battle comes down to Texas A&M and the Longhorns, I'd give the Aggies an edge after his official visit this weekend based on his Mother's conversations with the coaching staff.
