FBI hunts most wanted neighbor next door who allegedly faked cancer, scammed loved ones for luxury getaways
The FBI is searching for Vanessa OโRourke, 37, indicted in 2018 for allegedly faking terminal brain cancer to fraudulently raise tens of thousands of dollars for luxury travel instead of medical treatment. OโRourke, accused of wire fraud between 2015-2016, remains at large after using falsified diagnoses and travel claims to deceive supporters.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is continuing its nationwide manhunt for a Pennsylvania woman who allegedly faked terminal brain cancer to defraud friends, family and supporters of tens of thousands of dollars, diverting the proceeds into luxury travel instead of medical treatment. Vanessa OโRourke, now 37, was indicted in 2018 on 15 counts of wire fraud and remains one of the FBIโs most wanted fugitives after years on the run. Investigators allege that between October 2015 and July 2016 she convinced loved ones she was battling glioblastoma, an aggressive and incurable form of brain cancer, and urgently needed funds for experimental treatment abroad.
According to federal prosecutors, OโRourke claimed traditional therapies had failed and that an unproven procedure in Australia offered her only hope. Supporters responded with direct donations and organised fundraisers, believing they were helping a dying woman. Yet the FBI now alleges the diagnosis was entirely fabricated. Prosecutors say the money raised was used to finance two trips to Australia in 2016, during which OโRourke is alleged to have pursued sightseeing and leisure activities rather than medical care. No treatment records or evidence of illness have been found.
Authorities allege that after returning from Australia, OโRourke encouraged further fundraising, including an online donation page and a benefit dinner at a Pennsylvania restaurant, both promoted as supporting her continuing fight against cancer. Federal officials say the funds from these efforts were again used for travel rather than medical expenses. The scheme unraveled when investigators uncovered discrepancies in OโRourkeโs claimed medical history and travel itineraries, prompting the 2018 indictment on wire fraud charges. A federal arrest warrant was issued, but she has evaded capture for years.
The case has drawn renewed attention amid growing public concern over deceptive online fundraising and the exploitation of genuine sympathy for serious illness. While OโRourkeโs precise whereabouts remain unknown, the FBI is appealing to the public for information that could lead to her arrest. Anyone with knowledge of her location is urged to contact federal law enforcement immediately.
