Georgia baseball one win away from winning Athens Regional
Georgia is one win away from the Super Regionals after defeating Liberty 6-2, with a decisive Game 6 against Boston College or Liberty on Monday at 5pm ET. If victorious, they'll face Mississippi State in a likely home Super Regional.
The Georgia Bulldogs stand one victory away from securing their place in the NCAA baseball Super Regionals after dominating the Athens Regional with a commanding performance on Sunday. The third-ranked national seed, unbeaten in the double-elimination tournament, will face the winner of Monday’s showdown between Boston College and Liberty in a decisive Game 6 at 5pm ET on ESPN+. A win would send Georgia to a best-of-three Super Regional series, likely at home, against the victor of the Starkville Regional, where Mississippi State holds the top seed.
Georgia’s path to this point has been defined by both offensive firepower and defensive resilience. The Bulldogs’ bats erupted for five home runs in a 6-2 win over Liberty, extending their tournament dominance. Despite surrendering only three hits on Sunday and two the previous day, head coach Wes Johnson emphasised the strength of the pitching staff and the team’s ability to control the game when it mattered most. “Our pitching and defense was outstanding today,” Johnson said. “Our offense is extremely good, but other offenses are good as well. We just need to keep doing what we’re doing.”
The Bulldogs have been on a tear in May, losing just once in the month and entering the regional final with the momentum of a team that has not yet tasted defeat in Athens. Their 18-2 demolition of Long Island in Game 2 highlighted the depth of their offensive arsenal, while their narrow 4-3 win over Boston College in the opening game of the regional underscored their competitive edge. If Georgia stumbles on Sunday, a rematch with the regional runner-up would follow on Monday, but the Bulldogs appear poised to advance without complication.
With the Athens Regional effectively theirs to lose, Georgia’s focus remains on executing under pressure. The Super Regionals await, and the Bulldogs’ blend of power hitting and stingy pitching makes them a formidable opponent. Should they advance, they will take their winning form into what promises to be a high-stakes series, with the chance to progress to the College World Series still very much alive.
