On Monday, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that sneaker free agent Steph Curry had signed “a landmark 10-year deal” with Chinese sportswear company Li-Ning. Charania added that this deal allows the Golden State Warriors superstar to “extend his Curry Brand venture globally.”
Though this is a monumental development, one former NBA player made it clear that he was displeased with Curry’s latest shoe deal. Shortly after Charania reported this development, former Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter Freedom took a shot at Curry, throwing allegations at his political leanings.
“Steph is about to be repping those Communist 1’s. Shameful.”
At this point, it’s hardly a surprise that Freedom would weigh in on a politically charged decision such as the one that Curry has made. For years, Freedom has made a name for himself as an outspoken activist, fearlessly expressing his views on social media.
As for Curry, his signing with Li-Ning puts an end to months of “sneaker free agency.” Back in November, Curry confirmed that he’d parted ways with Under Armour, the sportswear company that he’d worked with for 13 years.
Earlier in the season, there were rumors that Curry was considering Nike; the buzz grew after he wore Nike sneakers during warmups shortly after his split with Under Armour was made public.
It should be noted that Curry is not the first NBA player to sign with Li-Ning. The likes of Jimmy Butler , CJ McCollum , and D’Angelo Russell were already Li-Ning athletes before Curry came into the picture.
While Enes Freedom didn’t think highly of Steph Curry’s latest shoe deal, Joe Johnson was all praises for the development with Li-Ning.
