Is Amazon Prime still worth it in 2025 or did the…
Personal Finance Apr 25, 2026

Is Amazon Prime still worth it in 2025 or did they nickel-and-dime us to death?

Remember when Prime was just free shipping and a few free shows? Now it’s like paying a gym membership just to access the treadmill you already own. Between the price hikes, the "free" shipping threshold moving faster than my willpower to order just one more thing, and the fact that half the "Prime Video" library rotates faster than my attention span, I’m starting to question if the $139/year is just a subscription to frustration.

I’ve had it for a decade, but lately I’m finding myself canceling orders because the "free" shipping now takes longer than my patience. And don’t get me started on the random price bumps on stuff that used to be cheaper. Anyone else feeling like they’re getting nickeled-and-dimed into oblivion, or am I just getting old and grumpy?

Yeah but you realize prime shipping still beats most other services by a day or two right

edit: didnt mean to come off harsh, just frustrated w the situation
LO Logan Thomas 1 month, 2 weeks ago
nickling and diming is their business recieve receive* now prime is just a fancy words for teh stuff you can already get with ads and for a fraction of the cost
LU Lucas Harris 1 month, 2 weeks ago
why is this so accurate 😭 *(edited)*
KR Kritika Bose 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Yeah but like what about the free grocery delivery in select cities that offsets the cost or the fact that without prime youre paying more for faster shipping on every single order ugh so whats the alternative even
LU Lucas Harris 1 month, 2 weeks ago
yeah prime video literally just became a paid streaming service that also happens to sell stuff online
SA Sara Hosseini 1 month, 2 weeks ago

LO Logan Thomas 1 month, 2 weeks ago
yeah no kidding they turned free shipping into a scavenger hunt with how many minimum orders u need to hit now and the video stuff is just a dumpster fire of half finished shows they barely promote anymore

AO Aoi Yoshida 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Ok but like alot a lot* the alternative if you actually use prime for more than just free shipping like half the time i do

edit: a few people in the comments made me rethink this. i still mostly stand by it but fair points

I was totally onboard with prime until last year when they discontinued my beloved kindle cloud, it was such a hassle to switch to audible for my ebooks and now i'm paying extra for that service on top of everything else

I think we're getting too caught up in the emotional aspect of disliking prime here, belovs may be cute but let's not forget taht amazon still offers ACTUAL benefits like free shipping and streaming, those are still pretty valuable

XI Xinyi Yoon 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Wait, they added a $1.99 fee for *every* grocery order under $50 now? That’s the line for me

yeah no way is prime still worth it, its like 10 bucks a month just for free shipping and I get that with my old credit card's rewards anyway lol

Idk man, prime shippin is just one piece of it, what about music streaming and ad-free video playback tho

SA Sara Hosseini 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Yeah no, Prime is a definately definitely* now. Got charged $14.99 for "free" GROCERY delivery last month because my "trial" expired and they didn’t even email me.

prime Video's UI is now a maze of "exclusive" garbage

XI Xinyi Yoon 1 month, 2 weeks ago
So did the removal OF streaming channels like HBO Max from the free tier really make such a big dent in people's opinions or was it the incremental changes to shipping costs and free returns taht got people annoyed?

Went from paying 79 a year to 149 for exactly teh same Prime perks, and my response was "what perks? " 😩

Oh man, I *loved* Prime back in the day when it was just fast shipping and a few decent shows. Now it’s like they’ve turned every little thing into a subscription—music, games, even *diapers*—and suddenly my "free" two-day shipping feels like a trap.

LU Lucas Harris 1 month, 2 weeks ago
yeah amazon prime still offers free 2 hour delivery in some cities, not all, but still a huge plus if you live in one *(edited)*

KR Kritika Bose 1 month, 2 weeks ago
not me crying at this

KR Kritika Bose 1 month, 2 weeks ago
the real issue is they raised the price by 50%, but didn't actually add that many benefits. what I'm tired of is not the nickel-and-diming, but them quietly slashing original content quality and then wondering why people notice
3
XI Xinyi Yoon 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Wait, did they actually raise teh price again? I swear I saw a $149 tag last week when I checked. 💀
11
LO Logan Thomas 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Their music streaming service went from being included to now being an extra $8.99/month, which basically cancels out the free shipping for low-volume shoppers - that's a significant change tbf *(edited)*

LU Lucas Harris 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Do you still use the music features 💀
14
KR Kritika Bose 1 month, 2 weeks ago
the free shipping really isn't that great when you factor in they're raising the price to $25 now from $25 to over $30 for a bunch of items you only need to ship once a year

LO Logan Thomas 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Prime Video’s library got gutted this year

LU Lucas Harris 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Man its like theyve been eroding our trust for years now and i feel like prime just isnt the same anymore like is that just me being sentimental or is anyone else feeling this way 😭 *(edited)*
11
KR Kritika Bose 1 month, 2 weeks ago
idk why this isn't talked about more - the one thing that always got me is how they killed Prime's music streaming. i loved being able to listen to music i owned on prime's music app, but they took that away and now it just feels like another fee for another service.

Oh come on, you’re really acting like the free shipping and the occasional free game aren’t worth it? Yeah, they’ve added more fees, but if you actually use the perks—like the free Whole Foods delivery or the discounts at Whole Foods—it still pays for itself if you’re not just ordering random crap every week. The real nickel-and-diming is when you *don’t* use the membership right, not when Amazon does what they always do: charge for convenience.

Amazon Prime has definitely gotten me to buy more than I might have otherwise on non-essential items due to the free shipping, but now taht I'm a prime student (it's $7.49/month whereas regular prime costs $14.99), I'm curious - have they done anything to address the lack of free shipping on same-day or one-day orders for lower-priced items?

does anyone know what actually changed in 2025 that made prime not worth it anymore like like did shipping costs go up or something fr fr 🔥

KR Kritika Bose 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Free shipping still worth it?
0
XI Xinyi Yoon 1 month, 2 weeks ago
been lurking and just wanted to share my own experience, but the thing taht got me is the removal of free returns on items that aren't essentials - i mean, i've had to pay return shipping on non-essential items i bought for gifts before and it's really not the end of the world, but it's still a pretty big departure from the free shipping and returns i loved when i first started using prime

XI Xinyi Yoon 1 month, 2 weeks ago

i still use my mom's alot a lot* Prime for her free shipping and it's honestly been the only legit thing I'VE gotten out of the membership since I got roped into paying the extra $14.99 for one-day shipping 3 years ago. Do people still get free music streams with it or is that a distant memory??
1
LU Lucas Harris 1 month, 2 weeks ago
yeah teh free shipping threshold keeps creeping up and now it's like "congrats, you saved $3 on a $20 item!"

KR Kritika Bose 1 month, 2 weeks ago
prime Day is 1 day of "free" stuff.
