Complete Guide to Sadaqah: Types, Benefits & How Much to Give
Sadaqah (Arabic: الصدقة) encompasses all forms of voluntary charity and good deeds in Islam. Unlike Zakat, it carries no minimum amount, no fixed timing, and can benefit any recipient in need.
Types of Sadaqah
Sadaqah includes monetary donations, building a well or mosque (Sadaqah Jariyah), teaching beneficial knowledge, planting a tree, smiling at a fellow Muslim, and even removing a harmful object from the path. The Prophet ﷺ said every act of goodness is Sadaqah.
Sadaqah Jariyah — Ongoing Charity
Sadaqah Jariyah is charity whose benefit continues after the giver's death — such as funding a school, digging a well, or sponsoring an orphan. Scholars consider this among the most rewarding forms of charity.
How Much Sadaqah Should You Give?
There is no fixed minimum. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged giving even half a date. Many scholars suggest 10% of income as a starting point. The Quran (2:261) promises that spending in the way of Allah is multiplied up to 700 times.
